Sleep Disordered Breathing is an all-inclusive term for breathing difficulties that range from mild snoring all the way to severe airway obstruction during sleep. When your child’s breathing is disrupted, their body sees the disruption much like choking. Their heart rate slows, which raises blood pressure, arouses the brain, and ultimately disrupts their sleep. Up to now, there have been very few answers to treating this issue. HealthyStart^™ could be the alternative to medications you're looking for.

How does HealthyStart™ work?

Will my child need braces after HealthyStart^™?

Generally no. When there is more room in the mouth, it's easier to guide teeth into the proper position. Unlike braces, the HealthyStart^™ appliance isn't worn all day. Because it's removable, you determine when to wear it.

So, is HealthyStart^™ an oral sleep appliance?

No. However, the flexible trays encourage your child to breathe through the nose and expand their airway to reduce the likelihood of sleep disordered breathing.

Is HealthyStart^™ covered by my insurance?

Generally yes! Since many dental insurance plans have an orthodontic benefit. – We'll gladly check with your insurance to find out what your estimated out-of-pocket expenses will be.

Is my child too old or too young for HealthyStart^™?

HealthyStart^™ works best for children ages 4 to 10 years old, but other HealthyStart^™ options are available for ages 11 to adult. Since HealthyStart^™ helps to guide the teeth as they come in, the ideal age is 6 to 8 years old.

How long does my child need to wear the appliance?

The answer varies with each unique case. Most patients complete treatment within about two years, since that’s how long it normally takes for children to lose baby teeth and for adult teeth to come in. Treatment may consist of simply wearing a comfortable mouthpiece while sleeping to open their airway, correct their bite, and straighten their teeth.

Will my child need to wear retainers?

When treatment is completed at an early age, generally retainers are not needed to keep the new straight smile. Once their teeth are straight, they'll stay that way for life. For teens and adults, the appliance can be worn a couple nights per week to maintain straight teeth.
